School facilities must accommodate shifting spatial demands while also responding to concerns around efficiency and sustainability, which has made modular architecture an increasingly relevant design strategy. This research examines the implementation of a timber-based modular system and identifies the material characteristics of timber modules through a case study of a vocational high school (SMK) in Gunungpati, Semarang. A qualitative, case-study approach was applied, drawing on design-document analysis together with a review of relevant literature. The results show that the timber modular system operates not merely as a construction method but also as a design principle that governs spatial layout and building massing, with modular units serving as a design grid that supports spatial flexibility and staged building expansion. From a material standpoint, timber modules prove lightweight and efficient, while contributing to reduced construction waste and a lower potential carbon footprint. The study concludes that timber-based modular architecture presents an adaptive, efficient, and sustainable approach to designing educational facilities.
