Interpretation Of Emoji Meaning In Gen Z Digital Communication On Whatsapp: A Pragmasemantic Study

Abstract

The study aims to describe the forms of emoji usage, analyze the role of context in shaping meaning, and identify the distinctive characteristics of emoji use among Generation Z. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected from nine WhatsApp conversations containing emojis. The data were gathered through documentation techniques and analyzed through data reduction, classification, and interpretation based on pragmatics  theory. The findings reveal that emojis function not only as emotional expressions but also as tools to regulate tone, maintain social relationships, and enhance message clarity. The meaning of emojis is highly context-dependent, influenced by communication situations, social relationships, and users’ emotional conditions. Additionally, Generation Z tends to use emojis in a creative, flexible, and expressive manner to construct meaning and manage interpersonal communication. This study highlights that emojis have become an essential component of multimodal digital communication, where meaning is dynamically constructed through the interaction between text, visual symbols, and context. Therefore, the pragmatics approach is effective in providing a comprehensive understanding of emoji meaning in contemporary digital interactions
